TIPS FOR STARTING CREATIVE DRAMA
Clarify your intentions/materials- Make clear your intentions. Outline what you're going to do and what they students should do as well. Mapping ahead will insure a smooth run.
Encourage reflection- Some students may not know how to process this new experience. Encourage silent, written, or shared reflection.
Start playing briefly- Easing the students into play makes the process less intimidating and easier to understand.
Create mood- Dim the lights or play music. Cue the students that this is a unique time.
Limit distractions- Take care of problems before they occur. Have a talk before the lesson about appropriate behavior and responses.
Select volunteers- Students that are willing to play make good examples for others. A positive role model extinguishes reluctance.
Build belief/commitment over time- Do not expect students to commit instantly. They will gain trust in drama only after a few positive experiences.
Sidecoach- Encourage students. Add more explicit directions if some are struggling. Lend a helping hand to "jumpstart" students if they need it.
Participate- Play! Be part of the fun. By modeling, students will understand the simplicity of the task and feel less intimidated
